Kaweco Pens Canada
A Quick History of Kaweco
Kaweco was founded in Heidelberg, Germany in 1883 and has been producing fountain pens, ballpoints, rollerballs and mechanical pencils for over 140 years. The brand went quiet after WWII but relaunched in 1995 with the Sport, a compact, pocket-sized fountain pen that posts to full writing length and has since become one of the most recognisable fountain pens in the world. Today Kaweco is known for two things: quality German engineering at accessible price points, and pens that genuinely fit in a shirt pocket, jacket, or daypack without feeling like a compromise.
The Kaweco Lineup - Which Model Is Right for You
Kaweco's catalogue looks complicated at first because many models share names (Sport, Student, Classic Sport, AL Sport). The table below cuts through it.
| Model | Body material | Size (capped) | Writing length (posted) | Best for | Price band |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classic Sport | Plastic | 105 mm | 134 mm | Everyday carry, first fountain pen | $ |
| Sport (lineups) | Plastic (seasonal) | 105 mm | 134 mm | Collectors, gifting | $ |
| AL Sport | Anodised aluminium | 105 mm | 134 mm | Daily carry, durability seekers | $$ |
| Brass Sport | Brass (develops patina) | 105 mm | 134 mm | Heft lovers, patina collectors | $$$ |
| Student | Acrylic | 144 mm | N/A (doesn't post) | Desk use, larger hands | $$ |
| Perkeo | Plastic (matte) | 130 mm | 152 mm | Beginners, comfortable grip | $ |
| Lunar Sport | Plastic (specialty) | 105 mm | 134 mm | Collectors, limited editions | $$ |
Classic Sport & Sport series
The Sport is Kaweco's flagship. Capped it's about the size of a lipstick; posted it writes like a full-sized pen. The Classic Sport is the plastic mainstay; seasonal and limited editions (Lunar Sport, Collection Series) share the same body in different colourways. If you want one Kaweco, this is it.
AL Sport
Same dimensions as the Classic Sport but with an anodised aluminium body. Heavier, cooler in the hand, and more scratch-resistant. The octagonal cap keeps it from rolling off a desk. Popular among EDC ("everyday carry") writers.
Brass Sport
Solid brass body. The heaviest of the Sport line at about 40 g. Develops a living patina as it's handled - fans love this, minimalists don't. Not for long writing sessions (the weight tires the hand) but unmatched for short note-taking.
Student
A full-sized pen, not a pocket pen. Larger acrylic body, doesn't post. Better balance for long writing sessions and a different nib feel than the Sport series. Comes in themed colour runs (Jazz, Blues, Skyline, etc.).
Perkeo
Kaweco's entry-level fountain pen. Triangular grip makes it forgiving for beginners who haven't settled into a fountain pen grip. Writes like a more expensive pen; priced accessibly.
Nibs, Inks and Refills
All Kaweco fountain pens use standard international short cartridges. One blue cartridge ships with every pen. To use bottled ink, you need the Kaweco Mini Converter (for Sport-series pens, it's the only converter that fits the short barrel) or the Kaweco Standard Converter (for the Student and other full-sized Kaweco pens). Nibs are steel, available in Extra Fine, Fine, Medium, Broad and Double Broad; Kaweco nibs are fully replaceable, pull the old nib unit out, push the new one in, no tools needed.
Kaweco also makes its own bottled inks in 30 ml and 50 ml sizes. They work well in Kaweco pens and in any other fountain pen that takes international cartridges.
