For most new writers, we recommend the Pilot Kakuno or Lamy Safari both are reliable, easy to maintain, and priced under $30. The Pilot Kakuno has a smiling-face nib designed to teach proper grip and works well for younger writers and adults alike. The Lamy Safari is a step up with a more durable build, ergonomic grip, and four nib sizes (EF, F, M, B). Both come with starter ink cartridges and can later be converted to bottled ink. If you'd rather start with a ballpoint or rollerball, the Lamy AL-Star and Cross Bailey are dependable picks in the same price range.
