According to the myth, the phoenix would spontaneously combust on its own accord, but instead of dying, it would be reborn as a young version of itself. In these mythologies there’s usually a grain of truth….
Flamingos often nest on salt flats, sometimes on volcanic land. These salty places can get extremely hot, and even though adult flamingos can put up with this kind of heat, their eggs can’t, so parent flamingos will build mounds with a nest on top to escape the heat. If observed from afar, the heat haze seemingly surrounding the nests could look like the haze of a fire, and if a chick was to hatch… well, voilà, we have a phoenix!
Behind the Design
Daniel Mackie is the artist behind The DM Collection. This series of watercolours is very heavily influenced by the Japanese print makers of the Ukiyo-e period, which flourished between 1670 and 1870. Like those great masters Daniel seeks to create a harmonious accord between a highly stylised form and the flowing lines of nature, creating decorative designs that lift the spirit and warm the heart.
