What Size Are Field Notes Notebooks?

Field Notes notebooks popular size measure 3.5 × 5.5 inches, the same dimensions as a standard index card. They are designed to fit in a back pocket, chest pocket, or the breast pocket of a jacket without creating a visible bulge. Each memo book contains 48 pages (24 sheets). The standard three-pack weighs about 57 grams.

The cover stock is 100# French Construction paper; the interior uses 50# Finch Opaque text paper, which is smooth enough for ballpoint, gel, and most fountain pens with medium or broad nibs. Fine and extra-fine fountain pen nibs on the ruled editions will work but may exhibit minor feathering on the graph editions due to the thinner paper weight.

Field Notes Editions: What's the Difference?

Field Notes releases its notebooks in themed editions, typically three or four times per year. Each edition uses a different cover design, paper stock, or format that makes it suited to a specific use case.

Original Kraft is the flagship uncoated kraft paper cover, plain orange rubber band closure, 48 ruled or graph pages. This is what most people picture when they hear "Field Notes."

Pitch Black uses a heavy black cover with graph paper and a more refined look, popular with designers and architects who want something less conspicuous than the kraft edition.

Dot-Grid editions use a dot matrix layout instead of ruled or graph lines, which suits bullet journaling and freehand sketching.

Heavy Industry is the rugged option, thick cover stock, Smyth-sewn binding, and paper rated for use in harsh conditions. Intended for outdoor work, job sites, and field use.

Seasonal and limited editions vary in format, paper, and dimensions. Some are standard pocket size; others are larger reporter-style notebooks. Check the edition description carefully before ordering if size is a constraint.

What Pen Works Best with Field Notes?

The standard Field Notes paper is rated for most writing instruments. Ballpoints and rollerballs perform well on every edition. Pencils are excellent, the uncoated kraft covers are made to be written on directly, and a pencil behind the ear is the intended companion.

For fountain pens, stick to medium or broad nibs and inks with moderate flow. Pigment-based inks and heavily saturated inks may show more bleed-through than dye-based inks on the standard 50# paper. The Pitch Black and Heavy Industry editions use heavier paper stock and handle fountain pens more comfortably.
