Originally published during the Meiji era, Bijutsukai and Shin Bijutsukai are celebrated art books showcasing multicolor woodblock prints by Japanese designers and artisans, published by Unsodo—the only publisher in Japan dedicated solely to hand-printed woodblock books. Founded in Kyoto in 1891, Unsodo continues these traditional techniques today, preserving the depth, texture, and subtle beauty of handcrafted printing. This cover design, selected from Bijutsukai, features mauve-pink dianthus flowers with delicate fringed petals, fresh green leaves, and plum blossoms in soft lavender tones against a natural off-white background. The softly blurred lines and gentle colors reflect authentic hand-printed craftsmanship. Though the front appears to show two vertically arranged color palettes, it is a single design. Two illustrations that originally appeared as facing pages are placed on the front and back of the cover. The back pocket contrasts the front’s quiet elegance with a bold, kaleidoscopic pattern of peonies encircled by butterflies, while the interior is finished in calming beige with lavender accents throughout.
